My partner and I are heading to Momentum at the end of the month to present one of our favorite co-lead workshops; Check Yourself — Recognizing Privilege in a Sex Ed Context. We’re really looking forward to the event — we just found out that Jocelyn Elders (yes, the “masturbation is ok and healthy” Dr Elders) will be on the closing keynote panel. Many of my favorite people in the sexuality industry will be there as well; educators, authors, manufacturers, sex workers, activists and more.

If you’ll be there, please come chat me up! Often times at events, I meet people on the way out who say “wow, I didn’t realize you’d actually want to talk to me” and at that point, I really do, but we’re heading to the airport. If you’ll be at Momentum, I absolutely want to meet you, get to know you and have sexy nerdy talk, so stop by and say hi.

Can’t wait for all the sex geekery this weekend will provide. Hope to see you there!

Hey folks –

I’m finally settling into our home here in Denver, from unpacking my multitudes of books into my library to getting my office set up for sex coaching and relationship clients to spending far too much time pining after seitan buffalo wings from City O City and Watercourse Foods.

But before I slow down my travel, I’ll be rocking out in the Washington DC area this weekend. First, I’ll be spending all of Saturday and Sunday days at Momentum Conference – check it out at www.momentumcon.com. With speakers from Carol Queen, Susie Bright and Tristan Taormino to Megan Andelloux, Reid Mihalko and Princess Kali (plus about another 45 speakers and panelists), it’s going to be an AMAZING sex positive event with great classes and panels. I’m teaching One Size Doesn’t Fit All – Intersections of Identities, and then am on three panels, about ethical in sex writing, choosing to be out or anonymous as a blogger, and being a feminist in the adult industry. I cannot wait!

Then, on Sunday evening, I’m presenting a class at Sugar, Baltimore’s feminist and woman/trans run amazing sex positive toy store. Info below:

Workshop at Sugar the Shop

Baltimore, MD

Date: April 3rd

Right Foot Red, Left Hand Lube: Sex Positions for Everyone
Forget the Kama Sutra and Tantra.  Leave your sex swing at home.  This workshop is on sex positions that anyone can do; no fancy hardware or spiritual revelations needed. We’ll talk about everything from Missionary to Froggy Style, Reverse Cowgirl to the Sneaky Vampire. Want a threesome? Got positions for that.  Have arthritis? We’ve got positions for that. Ready to integrate sex toys into the bedroom (or shower, or car)? Check. Bring your favorite position in mind, and be ready to try out new positions (with clothes on) as we sex-plore our way through the endless types of positions available to us. Open to singles, couples and more-somes, and people of all gender and orientations.

Hope to see you there!

I’m baaaaaack!

That’s right. After having spent five days in the city of sin (being incredibly NOT sinful), I’m back in slightly warmer Arizona, with my nose to the grindstone.

First and most important announcement: I am now the proud owner of an Njoy Eleven, thanks to Greg and Deanna, two of the wonderful Njoy gang. I cannot wait to try it out, and then give it an important and prominent place on my bookshelf d’art.

I was so happy to get to see many of my old friends, including Jamye Waxman, the JeJoue Crew, Tess and Diva from Tied Up Events, Clare and Riley from Smitten Kitten (and FINALLY got to meet Jennifer, the owner), Molly and Matie from Self Serve in New Mexico, Tres from SpareParts, Jackie Strano and Carol Queen from Good VibrationsGram Ponante (who I forgot to tell that I DO teach blow job classes!), Jacq Jones from Sugar, Shine Louise Houston, Syd Blakovich, Dylan Ryan, Tina Horn, Courtney Trouble, April Flores and more.  Also, I got to meet the Jimmy Jane Crew, folks from Sliquid, more folks who will be presenting at Momentum in April, Laura and Hudson from the Tool Shed in Wisconsin, Buck Angel and his wife Elaine, and more. The sheer number of sex positive folks at the show this year was phenomenal, and continues to grow, making me happy, and making it totally worth going to what has traditionally been a very mainstream porn convention.

The awards show itself was only entertaining because I sat with Deanna from Njoy and Jamye. Except for Joanna Angel winning best solo girl site, there were very few surprises, and most all of the porn awards went to very traditional mainstream companies and movies. I was happy for JeJoue, Good Vibes, Babeland, Tristan Taormino and New Sensations for their wins. For the most part, it was same old, same old. I wonder how long it will take for it to change…and I know it will, because sex positive, queer AND ethical companies got nominations the last two years…it’s just getting that trend to continue and go further into actually winning awards.

All in all, the trip was totally worth it, albeit exhausting. Shout out to Kimberlee Cline for letting me stay with her father for the second two nights, and to Lynn Comella for hosting a wonderful party of smart people on Friday night, as well as to everyone who made time to say hello to me, and helped me to welcome and part of the community.

And there is no sleep for the sex educator; I’m back in the office today, trucking away.

This week brings me back to my homeland; Colorado!

The title is a bit deciving — while I will be spending a good deal of my time in Denver, I’ll also be heading down to Colorado Springs tonight to do a Sex Toy 101 event at Colorado College, and check out our new Fascinations store that just opened in Colorado Springs.

Thursday the 14th is a busy day, starting with a 7am interview/talk show with Lewis and Floorwax on the Fox. Please tune in! Then, Thursday night at 7pm is a 100% FREE sex ed workshop at the Aurora Fascinations. It’s call What’s Up with the Butt? Anal 101 and is great for everyone who is interested in anal sex, whether they’ve tried it or not, regardless of gender, orientation, etc. It’s going to be super fun! Plus, the first 20 people to show up get $10 gift cards for Fascinations, and everyone gets refreshments and the chance to enter a raffle for toys, gift cards and more! It’ll be at 2680 S. Havana Ave in Aurora, 7pm.

Friday, I’m doing a private all staff training for the Colorado Fascinations employees, checking out a venue for my wedding next fall, attending a friend’s wedding, and then rocking out at the Skull FUK (Fetish und Kink) party at the RACK Room.

Saturday, I’m planning to hang out with my best friend, and hopefully do a shoot for GoodDykePorn.

If you’re in Colorado, I’d love to see you while I’m out there. And if you’re interested in having me come speak at a campus/store/center/dungeon near you, please contact me!

If you’re curious about fisting, come learn from an expert. Shanna Katz will explain vaginal fisting is (and what it isn’t), how to introduce it into your relationships, what you need to think about in regards to safety, why lube is so important and more. Today, I’m flying to Pittsburgh, PA, for the annual conference of AASECT; the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists.

I’m a bit nervous. I’ve never been before. Why? Because I often feel quite a bit of a black sheep in the field.  Because I teach adults about how to add a variety of pleasure to their sex lives, from communication to fisting, safer sex to fire play. Because I don’t work in a “traditional” area of the field. Because I’m often told I’m too “risque” or “on the edge” by many of my cohorts. Because I was alienated during my time at Widener for working in both the feminist porn and sex toy fields.

So we’ll see. I want to learn and grown and network, and meet other interesting educators.  I want to be a small part of this community. But on the other hand, I’m also not looking to be judged. I LOVE the type of education I do, and each time I teach, I feel on top of the world.  I love it when someone emails me a question they haven’t been able to have answered, or approaches me after a class, telling me they’ve never had an orgasm, and want a toy suggestion.

I do so much more than sell toys. I educate the community. I speak at colleges and universities, educating students and educators alike. I do outreach online.  I love my “job” and what I do.  And I hope to bring some of that passion to the academic world.

Wish me luck!

I’ll be in Seattle this weekend, at Sex 2.0 2010.

I was lucky enough to go last year in Washington, DC (thanks to a little help from a friend who hired me to edit her novel). This year, I’m going thanks to Fascinations, who is also a Gold Sponsor of the event.

Like last year, I’m speaking, but less last minute. I’m doing a workshop on The Intersections of Sexuality and Disability Saturday morning at 10am. The rest of the weekend, I’ll be attending sessions, speaking with people I’ve missed, connecting with new friends and contacts, and more.

In case you’d like to know about my class – here is the description:
This is part class, part support group, part community organizing that is geared towards people who identify as those with disabilities or as dis/abled , and their partners (dis/ability is self defined and can include cognitive, mental, and physical ability levels). This talk is very discussion based, and will cover topics such as coming out to your partner(s), how to discuss ability levels with friends, partners, family, etc, new things to try regarding sex (positions, meds, toys), correct terminology, negotiating sex play (including kink/BDSM play), and much more. Participants are encouraged to share suggestions, trade ideas, work on creating a community and more. Great for people of all ability levels (and their partners) who want to recognize themselves as sexual beings.

What do you get when you cross myself, Oh Megan, Sarah Sloane and more? A plethora of fantabulous sex educators all coming together at Brown University for Sex Week 2010!  I’ll be speaking tomorrow and Tuesday, and the others throughout the week.

Interested in what I’ll be doing classes/workshops on? Want to come out and get some learnin’?

Monday, March 15th

Strap-On 101 w/ Shanna Katz

Time/Location: 12:00pm @ Sarah Doyle Women’s Center lounge (26 Benevolent St.)

Come learn all about the joys and pleasures of strapping it on. Who said harnesses were just for girl-on-girl action? In this workshop, we’ll discuss double-penetration, “pegging,” using harnesses for cuckolding, “femmecock,” and so much more! Ever wonder what the difference is between a g-string and a dual strap? We’ll cover that too! You’ll learn how to properly work a strap-on, contemplate a plethora of positions, and learn about the pros/cons of different types of toys. This class is open to singles, couples and moresomes of all sexes and genders. Never used a harness before? That’s fine – we’ll start with the basics. Plus, everyone will get to try on harnesses with toys to get a feel for the different styles, as well as figure out what works best for them.

SexAbility w/ Shanna Katz (and potentially Marlene Chait, a Brown Post-Doc Research Fellow whose doctoral dissertation is ‘An Exploratory Study About Women with Physical Disabilities: Survey of Their Views on Personal Assistance Services (PAS), Sexuality Education, and Sexual Expression’)

Time/Location: 5:30pm @ Salomon 202

People of all ability levels are sexual beings. Sex is hard enough to navigate and negotiate when one fits in with society’s notions of what a sexual being is, but once you add in the concept of ability, it can become quite challenge. This workshop is discussion-based, and covers issues such as coming out to your partner(s), how to discuss ability levels, new things to try, correct terminology, negotiating sex play (including kink/BDSM play), and much more. Participants are encouraged to share suggestions, trade ideas, etc. Great for people of all ability levels (and their partners) who want to recognize themselves as sexual beings. This workshop hopes to challenge people’s viewpoints, foster discussion and conversation, and open doors towards a shift in the social constructions surrounding sexuality and disability.

Make it Work Outside the Box: Relationship-Mapping & Communication w/ Shanna Katz

Time/Location: 8:30pm @ List 120 (64 College St.)

Description: Communication is key, but how DO we communicate? More importantly, how does communication change (or not) once we break the boundaries of what are considered “traditional relationships”? In this workshop we’ll talk about the different styles of communication, the languages of love, types of non-verbal communication, why communcation is so important, and how to adapt all of this for kinky AND vanilla relationships. We’ll gain an understanding about the basic types of relationships that people have in their lives, how we can map them, patterns to look for, and what we can get out of these maps. Finally, we’ll talk about polyamory/non-monogamy – its various facets, how to get into it, and most importantly, how we can make it work when there are more than two people involved. Bring paper, pen, and an open mind. We will be raffling off two Tantus toys at this event, so make sure you arrive early and get a seat!

Tuesday, March 16th

Feminist Pornography (Out For Lunch) w/ Shanna Katz

Time/Location: 12:00pm @ LGBTQ Resource Center (3rd floor Hillel, at 80 Angell St.)

Are you one of those who has wondered exactly what it is that makes porn “feminist” or “sex positive?” Join us as we talk about definitions of pornography and obscenity, and how sexual pleasure can be recording in a feminist and sex positive way. We’ll discuss current companies who identify as sex positive, and what separates them (or not!) from current, mainstream pornographic productions. By the end of this talk, everyone will still have formed different opinons, but will be more educated as to what this sex positive porn movement is.
