I am more fortunate than you, in that I have someone to support me in many ways. However, due to his disability, he can't drive, something I find exhausting and painful.
When traveling to events, particularly if we are schlepping a huge amount of toy weight and baggage, despite the modern convenience of an airplane, etc, there are times when we have to handle all the weight ourselves. Frankly, traveling is so exhausting for me that we now schedule in an extra day before and after an event, because I WILL be in bed those days. I love what I teach, but the effort can be truly annihilating!
The worst part is after a long day, when I just need to sit down and there are padded chairs in sight(that are free). It's difficult to ask someone to get up and give me their space, even when I think I'm about to fall down.
There have been some wonderful folks who have come to my rescue at times; I cannot thank them enough. Then there are those who come up from behind and pat, grab, or whatever my back or shoulder, usually in the worst possible place at the worst possible time--but it's NOT their fault, since I don't wear a little sign that says--DO NOT TOUCH HELGA HERE OR HERE OR HERE!!!
This year we decided to drive from NC to Atlanta instead of flying. It took two days to make what is usually a 5 or 6 hour trip, and I was thrumming with the beating my car and the car noise did to me!

I salute you, Shana, keep up the good work, and if I see you at an event, we can talk, perhaps I can help you out when you need a hand.....some days are better than others, after all....

Having gone from living in a large city with easily accessible sex resources to a state in the Bible belt where abstinence-only 'education' is the norm, the answers are clearly visible. Teen pregnancy rates are astronomical, STIs are commonplace, women are ashamed of their sexuality (and those that aren't are ostracized as hussies and tramps) and men are all viewed as walking penises that apparently are only capable of thinking about 'gettin' it'. Is this the case for everyone here? Of course not (though I've found that, by and large, the individuals that don't think this way tend to be from outside of the area) but it is the majority.

I have also noticed that those that walk outside of the hetero-normative, gender binary tend to be treated as lesser in areas where sex ed is taught as abstinence-only, likely a byproduct of those same antiquated, reckless and misguided education systems.

Sex education is crucial to a healthy, thriving, accepting community by empowering and educating the individuals within it.
